If you’re looking to study English in the UK at an accredited institution, the Short-term Student Visa (English Language) allows you to do so for a course lasting between 6 and 11 months.

This visa is designed specifically for non-UK nationals aged 16 or over who wish to study English language only courses at a UK institution for a period of more than 6 months and up to 11 months.

It is different from the standard Student Visa, as it:

  • Only permits English language study
  • Does not allow extensions or switching to other visas
  • Does not allow work or family dependants

Length of stay: Up to 11 months

Purpose: English language course only

Who Can Apply?

You must:

  • Be 16 years or older
  • Have an offer of admission to study English at a UK-based accredited institution
  • Be able to show you can support yourself financially during your stay
  • Intend to leave the UK at the end of your course
  • Have suitable accommodation arranged
  • Be able to pay for your return travel
  • Be from a country outside the UK and Ireland

What Courses Are Eligible?

  • Full-time English language courses at an accredited UK institution
  • Duration must be longer than 6 months and up to 11 months
  • Course must involve intensive English instruction (general, academic, or business)
  • This visa does not allow any other subject of study or part-time courses.

Common Reasons for Refusal

  • Inadequate course or provider details
  • Travel or accommodation plans not clearly shown
