If you’ve been in a committed relationship for at least 2 years—one that’s similar to a marriage or civil partnership—you may be eligible to apply as an unmarried partner. Your partner (the sponsor) must meet specific immigration criteria. You don’t necessarily need to have lived together continuously, but strong evidence of the relationship is essential.

This visa is open to both same-sex and opposite-sex partners.

Can I apply from inside the UK?

Yes—if you’re already in the UK on a valid visa, you may be able to switch to the Unmarried Partner Visa from within the country. You can also apply from outside the UK as a standard entry clearance application.

How do I prove the relationship is genuine?

This is one of the most critical parts of the application. You’ll need to show that your relationship is real, ongoing, and committed. Evidence may include:

  • Shared tenancy or utility bills
  • Joint financial responsibilities
  • Correspondence addressed to both partners
  • Photos together over time
  • Communication records (messages, emails, calls)
  • Travel documents showing shared holidays or visits

What are the financial requirements?

The sponsor (or applicant, in some cases) must show:

  • A minimum gross income of £29,000 per year
  • Alternatively, savings or a combination of income and savings may be used
If the sponsor receives certain eligible benefits, they may still qualify under the “adequate maintenance” requirement.

What are the accommodation requirements?

You must prove that suitable housing is available that:

  • Will not be overcrowded
  • Meets UK living standards
You’ll typically need to submit tenancy agreements, property inspection reports, or letters from landlords.

What about the English language requirement?

The applicant must meet the English requirement through one of the following:

  • Pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) at A1 level or higher
  • Hold a UK degree or a degree taught in English
  • Be a national of a majority English-speaking country
  • Be exempt due to age (65+) or certain medical conditions

What does the visa cost?

  • From outside the UK: £1,928
  • From within the UK: £1,321
  • Plus: Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) of £1,035 per year
  • Other potential costs: translations, English tests, TB tests (if required), and optional priority service

What happens after approval?

Once your Unmarried Partner Visa is approved:

  • You’ll be granted leave to remain for 30 months (2.5 years)
  • This visa can be renewed
  • After 5 years of continuous residence in the UK as a partner, you may be eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
